In this episode Certified Bates Method Teacher, Nathan Oxenfeld, recounts the tale of Margaret Darst Corbett getting arrested and taken to court for teaching the Bates Method in the early 1940s. Local optometrists and ophthalmologists charged Mrs. Corbett with "practicing medicine and optometry and using drugs without a license". However, Corbett never claimed to be an eye doctor, nor ever used any medicine, lenses, or surgeries in her "eye re-education" lessons. Her innocence, backed up by the testimony of hundreds of her loyal followers who benefitted from receiving her services, led not only to the case being dismissed, but also boosted her publicity and gained her many new students, including members of the jury in her trial!
